Benzodiazepine addiction
Benzodiazepine dependence usually starts with a prescription that worked. The body adapts faster than most people are warned about, and coming off these drugs without medical supervision can be dangerous. We will be straight with you about that.
What it looks like
The dose that used to settle things stops settling them. Anxiety returns between doses rather than only in the situations that caused it, sleep gets worse instead of better, and the person may be seeing more than one prescriber to keep the supply steady. Because it started as medicine, it often takes a long time before anyone in the family uses the word dependence.
What helps
Stopping suddenly is the thing to avoid. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures, and a supervised taper is the safe way through it. That means a medical team setting the schedule, adjusting it as the body responds, and watching for the symptoms that matter. Alongside the taper, therapy addresses the anxiety or sleep problem the prescription was written for, so there is something to manage it other than the drug.
